Barcelona Design Week ’13
Behind the slogan Design vision 2050, this 8th event tries to find answers to the challenges that designers must face in various fields over the next decades: habitat, healthcare, eco design… amongst others.
That morning I had my personal energy dose, consisting of a coffee and a massive caramel muffin. Direct to the cartridge, but never mind, the day was too long and I had lot of things to do. Let’s burn those calories!
First stop: Tcherassi Vilato
I was the first visitor in the morning, so I felt free to see this new collection, consisting of the table “Miss Understood”, a very playful and colourful design that brings some fun and customisation. There was on the second floor the “Better than Chocolate” sofa with it’s tablet shape that makes you want to bite it. And also a big version of “Miss Understood” for offices and then the “TryAngle” chair.
Impressive Showroom/Shop, and worth a visit because of its 96 year history and the important lighting projects they have made, for example, for La Sagrada Familia. The place had two floors, the first one focused on design week so there were some interesting concepts, and the ground floor had not only luminaires but also a motorbike collection.
“Surprisingly Ingenious” – Austrian Design Excellence
“Diversion Toilet” won the Bill & Melinda Gates award in 2011. The idea was to reinvent the toilet, making affordable for the poor, clean, safe and universally applicable. The toilet’s internal water circulates and is sterilized in order to use the same water again and again. Design for helping people… is something better?
Zitten by Piet Hein Eek Opening
The exhibition was located across in two spaces. The first one was dedicated to his latest works (furniture design, illumination…) and in the next door it was focused in his vision about chairs during his career.
The next morning I arrived early to Born, the Barcelona area where the design circuits were being made. This activity allows designers to conect with other professionals and exange ideas, mails and telephone numbers. Sometimes you need to meet different people with different work styles to get inspiration and to know that there are other people that makes things like you. You know, being creative is sometimes a bit odd, so it helps to make you feel you are not alone in with your design fate!
– Villuendas + Gomez disseny i comunicacio
This studio was created by three women and a man, each of them mastering one different matter: painting, graphic design, architecture and marketing, being a multidisciplinary team that can face all kinds of projects. In their client list you can find important names from the Catalonian scene like Barcelona City Hall, Liceu Theater, the National Museum of Art of Catalonia (MNAC), TV3 (Catalonian TV channel)… among others.
– AUS3 – Guillem Martinez
We walked again to narrow streets until we find a big shop window where some handcrafted luminaires where exhibited so we knew we were in the right place. We came in and walked downstairs that lead us to a very cozy workshop leaded by the designer Guillem Martinez.
Dutch Bike Exhibition
If you are, like I am, a bicycle lover, you must check this nice this exhibition at Design Hub. And even if you are not, you will discover that rubber from bike tires can be used in furniture, textile, ornament… The first activity of the guest country: Netherlands.
